Chair Spin – Pole Dancing

Chair Spin

The Chair SpinI find some of my pole dancing students often find the Chair Spin difficult to master. They often worry about their lack of strength and inability to hold their own body up. Here are my top tips for perfecting the Chair Spin…

The Chair Spin pose (left) is a still picture of the intended shape your body should aim to end up like.

1. Begin with your inside and strong arm up straight and as high as you can reach.

2. Walk around the pole to get some momentum.

3. Place your outside arm across your body and on the pole just below your chest, keeping it straight. Whilst standing on your inside leg, kick out your outside leg quite low. The further you kick your leg, the more momentum you get and the faster and easier you will spin.

4. Whilst your outside leg is moving, bring it up so your leg is bent at a 45 degree angle, as in the picture.

5. Hop off the group with your inside leg and bring it up to join your outside leg.

6. Continue spinning until your feet naturally reach the ground while your legs are still bent. Stand up, pushing your bum up first.

Chair Spin Tips

Chair SpinArms – Keep both arms straight and try to lock them in, with out over extending them. Pull the pole towards you with your inside arm and push the pole away with your outside arm. This push / pull action really is all the strength you need for this spin.

Legs – Often people find it difficult to initially get their feet off the ground. Really kicking out that outside leg will help you spin and lift off. Point your toes for an elegant finish.

Spinning – Even if your legs don’t end up exactly where you want them at first, you will get there the more you try. You can always work on your abs and leg muscles to really help to control the spin. When spinning your legs will naturally be slightly further out from the pole than your upper body. This is how the spin is meant to look!

Exercises – Put your arms in the position they are in for the chair spin. Practise holding your abs tight whilst keeping your legs together and lifting them off the ground. Repeat this 5 times if you can, and repeat on the other side. This will get your body used to holding itself properly for this spin.

Don’t panic – One of the main factors restricting people in their pole dancing is the fear of falling over or sliding off the pole. You really need to believe in yourself and give yourself a fair chance of performing this move. If you do fall, you’ll only land on your feet, over a very small distance and it won’t hurt at all.
